Google Search Console Low-Hanging Keyword Optimization

Find and optimize existing search queries ranking just off page one

This SEO tactic uses exported performance data from Google Search Console to identify keywords where your site already ranks past position three. By updating existing pages or creating dedicated content for these terms, you can capture more organic traffic with relatively low effort.

How it works

  1. Connect and verify your domain property on Google Search Console (search.google.com/search-console).
  2. In the left menu, navigate to 'Performance' and click 'Search results'.
  3. Click the 'Export' button in the top-right corner to download the report as CSV or Google Sheets.
  4. Open 'Queries.csv' to view all search queries, impressions, CTR, and average ranking positions.
  5. Identify relevant keywords that have impressions and rank past position 3 (e.g., positions 4 through 20).
  6. Optimize for these keywords by either:
  7. Creating new, dedicated pages focused on that specific search intent, or
  8. Adding dedicated sections and subheadings targeting those queries onto the existing pages that are already ranking for them.

What it's for

  • Identify low-hanging search queries ranking between positions 4 and 20
  • Update existing articles with targeted subheadings and sections to boost ranking positions
  • Spot content gaps to create new dedicated landing pages based on existing search impressions

Key points

  • Navigate to Performance and Search results in Google Search Console
  • Export query performance data as a CSV or Google Sheet
  • Analyze Queries.csv for terms with solid impressions but average positions above 3
