Competitor Keyword Gap Traffic Strategy

Workflow to find low-difficulty competitor keywords using Feedspot and Semrush

This SEO workflow finds competitor sites via curated blog directories and identifies low-difficulty, high-volume search terms using Semrush's Keyword Gap tool. Comparing domains against industry peers highlights quick-win content opportunities that require minimal ranking effort.

How it works

  1. Go to blog.feedspot.com and search for your industry (e.g., 'plumbing').
  2. Open the top curated listicle (e.g., '100 Best Plumbing Blogs') to see ranked competitors in your niche.
  3. Collect domains from the top 5 competitors as well as positions 20 through 25.
  4. Log into Semrush (semrush.com) and navigate to SEO > Keyword Gap under Competitive Research.
  5. Enter your domain and paste in a competitor's domain.
  6. View the keyword comparison table and filter by 'All'.
  7. Look for keywords where Keyword Difficulty (KD%) is green (easy, typically under 30%) with the highest possible search volume.
  8. Write a comprehensive blog post targeting each discovered low-KD topic to rank and siphon traffic.
