How to Grow Fresh Air Indoors (3 Houseplants Method)

A botanical strategy using three houseplants to filter air and generate oxygen.

This method, popularized by Kamal Meattle based on NASA and TERI research, uses three specific indoor plants to naturally filter air and generate fresh oxygen. By combining daytime oxygenators, nighttime oxygenators, and chemical filters, it reduces airborne toxins and supports healthier indoor spaces. It provides a simple, natural approach to improving indoor air quality at home or in the office.

How it works

To naturally supply fresh indoor oxygen and filter pollutants:

  1. Areca Palm (Chrysalidocarpus lutescens) – 'The Living Room Plant':
  2. Function: Removes CO2 and produces oxygen during the day.
  3. Quantity: 4 shoulder-high plants per person.
  4. Care: Wipe leaves daily/weekly to keep dust off, grow in sterile vermicompost or hydroponics, and move outdoors every 3–4 months.
  5. Mother-in-Law's Tongue / Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) – 'The Bedroom Plant':
  6. Function: Converts CO2 into oxygen at night.
  7. Quantity: 6 to 8 waist-high plants per person.
  8. Placement: Ideal for bedrooms to maintain oxygen levels during sleep.
  9. Money Plant / Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) – 'The Specialist Plant':
  10. Function: Filters volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, and other chemical pollutants.
  11. Care: Grows easily in hydroponic setups or standard pots.

What it's for

  • Generate fresh indoor oxygen during the day and night
  • Filter airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and formaldehyde
  • Improve home or office air quality naturally without electronic purifiers

Key points

  • Areca Palm (Chrysalidocarpus lutescens): produces oxygen and absorbs CO2 during the day (recommended 4 shoulder-high plants per person)
  • Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata): converts CO2 into oxygen at night, ideal for bedrooms (recommended 6 to 8 waist-high plants per person)
  • Golden Pothos / Money Plant (Epipremnum aureum): filters VOCs, formaldehyde, and other chemical pollutants
  • Care guidelines including leaf-wiping for dust removal and occasional outdoor rotation
