AGENTS.md Directives: Minimal UI Copy & UX/DX/AX Optimization

Two concise rules for AI coding agents to improve UI and trade-offs

This note provides two copy-paste directives for an AGENTS.md or system prompt file. The rules instruct AI coding agents to eliminate unnecessary UI helper copy in favor of clearer layouts, and to balance user experience, developer experience, and agent experience in every implementation decision.

The prompt

Two lines to paste into AGENTS.md:

1. "Cut taglines, helper text and secondary labels. If a screen needs them to make sense, fix the layout."

Meaning: agents should not paper over a confusing layout with explanatory copy; remove taglines, helper text and secondary labels, and instead restructure the layout so the screen reads on its own.

2. "Make the best decision that will elevate all three: the user experience (UX), developer experience (DX), and agent experience (AX) always, without breaking anything."

Meaning: a standing tie-breaker rule for any implementation choice: optimize UX, DX and AX together and never regress existing behaviour.

What it's for

  • Prevent AI coding agents from adding unnecessary UI copy to compensate for confusing layouts
  • Guide AI code generation to balance user, developer, and agent ergonomics
  • Standardize code and UI design heuristics across an automated development workflow

Key points

  • UI clarity rule: removes taglines, helper text, and secondary labels in favor of structural fixes
  • Holistic evaluation rule: forces decisions to elevate UX, DX, and AX simultaneously
  • Regression prevention: explicitly instructs the agent not to break existing functionality
  • Drop-in compatibility with AGENTS.md, cursor rules, or generic AI prompt files
