Meng To's WebGL and UI Animation Prompt Workflow

Two-step prompt workflow and prompt library for WebGL UI animations

A practical prompting method for generating complex WebGL effects and UI animations using AI coding assistants. It breaks the generation process into an initial layout match followed by iterative animation prompting rather than trying to build both at once. It also includes reusable prompt snippets for interactive particles, grids, and border effects.

How it works

Workflow: animations/WebGL don't work well on the first prompt — apply them to an existing design. Step 1: screengrab your design and prompt: "ONLY make the UI EXACTLY as reference. Animate details. Add WebGL animation of the lines." (result will be underwhelming). Step 2 (more important): iterate on animation — "add particles surrounding the layout like debris and lines using webgl, subtle dark lines and particles. rain hitting the layout and splashing", then "more rains, longer lines, gooey liquid". More prompt concepts: "typewriter animation on heading looped. container sized lines with mini squares in corners." / "beam animations on horizontal lines. flashlight hover on borders." / "webgl particles earth globe. make the particles a bit brighter. should be brightest near mouse. add flashlight on borders on mouse hover." / "dark mode, webgl lines, performant. full-width 3d grid lines. make the 3d grid respond to mouse." / "make webgl interactive, push on hover, explore on click." / "only keep the dots. make this performant. add lines shooting from each dot."

What it's for

  • Add interactive 3D WebGL backgrounds to existing frontend components
  • Layer micro-animations like flashlight borders and typewriter text into AI-generated interfaces
  • Iterate on visual particle density and physics without breaking component layouts

Key points

  • Two-step prompting method: lock layout fidelity first, then layer animation prompts
  • Iterative prompt refinement techniques for particle density, liquid, and debris effects
  • Mouse-reactive WebGL prompt snippets including interactive 3D grids and globes
  • Micro-interaction prompt formulas for borders, beam animations, and typewriter headings
