YouTube Potential Index
A five-part framework to assess a YouTube channel's breakout potential
Created by YouTube strategist Paddy Galloway, this framework evaluates whether a channel has the fundamental market conditions to achieve massive scale. Instead of focusing solely on packaging or editing metrics like CTR and retention, it analyzes market sizing, early traction signals, and creator advantages.
The framework
- Less than 10% of TAM — pick niches with 90%+ growth ahead; early in journey. Estimate TAM for your niche by looking at top creators and most-viewed videos. Example (Jesser, 2021): avg viewership 500,000, TAM estimate for niche 10,000,000 views → 5% of basketball TAM (now averages 3m+ views per video).
- Early signal of video-market fit — some form of traction; check for outliers. 'Is there any sign of life': even 1 of the last 100 uploads gaining traction. If 50-100 uploads with no traction (1,000 views = traction), you may lack video-market fit.
- Category winner potential — ability to lead niche, desire to win.
- Unfair advantage — competitive edge, moat.
- Creator obsession — genuine passion, in it for the long run.
What it's for
- Assess whether a YouTube niche has enough headroom to support a massive channel
