Wiring 2-Way Dual Control and Zigbee Smart Switch Module
Step-by-step wiring guide for two-way switches and in-wall Zigbee relays.
This wiring method demonstrates how to convert a standard single-switch light circuit into a two-way dual-control setup and integrate an in-wall Zigbee relay module. It preserves existing physical switch toggles while adding wireless and automation capabilities via Zigbee. It provides clear guidance on line, neutral, and traveler connections across switch boxes.
How it works
- Single Switch Wiring:
- Connect the neutral wire directly to the light fixture.
- Connect the live wire from the breaker/source to the 'L' terminal of the switch.
- Connect the control (switched live) wire from the 'L1' terminal of the switch to the light fixture.
- Dual Control (Two-Way / 3-Way Switching):
- Use two single-pole double-throw (SPDT / 2-way) switches.
- Connect the traveler terminals: 'L1' of Switch 1 connects to 'L1' of Switch 2; 'L2' of Switch 1 connects to 'L2' of Switch 2.
- Connect the incoming Live wire to the 'L' terminal of Switch 1.
- Connect the fixture's Control (switched live) wire to the 'L' terminal of Switch 2.
- Retrofitting Zigbee In-Wall Module:
- Insert the Zigbee in-wall switch module into the circuit between the switched control line, live power, and neutral line according to the module's terminal diagram.
- Enables control via original physical switches, mobile app, wireless scene controllers, handheld remotes, voice assistants (e.g. Alexa), and contact sensors.
What it's for
- Convert a single light switch into a two-way switch setup across two locations
- Retrofit an existing light circuit with an in-wall Zigbee module without replacing physical switches
- Automate room lighting using Zigbee while retaining physical wall controls
Key points
- Direct neutral connection from breaker panel to fixture
- Single switch wiring using L for live feed and L1 for switched live
- Dual-control configuration routing L1 and L2 traveler wires between two SPDT switches
- Zigbee relay module integration into line, neutral, and switched load paths
- Preservation of manual wall switch toggles alongside smart wireless control
