The 3 Content Types Framework
A framework separating social posts into dedicated brand, community, or sales pieces.
A content strategy framework by creator Tom Noske that separates social media content into three distinct buckets: brand, community, and sales. It advises against trying to accomplish all three in a single post, recommending dedicated, uncompromised assets for each goal instead.
How it works
Do not attempt to combine brand building, community engagement, and sales into a single piece of content:
- Stop Blending: Trying to subtly sell, show personality, and build brand equity in one post usually results in an ineffective piece of content that achieves none of its goals.
- Separate the Three Goals:
- Brand Content: Focus exclusively on prestige, aesthetics, high-level storytelling, and brand positioning.
- Community Content: Focus strictly on connection, engagement, personality, and audience dialogue.
- Sales Content: When selling, sell directly and without hesitation. Treat your own digital products or services like a high-tier external sponsor—create dedicated, full-effort ads/commercials for your own products rather than relying on weak subtle mentions. You can earn far more monetizing your own products through dedicated ads than through third-party sponsors.
What it's for
- Structure an organic social media calendar around clear, single-objective posts
- Create high-converting sales assets for personal digital products or services
- Audit an existing content backlog to diagnose low sales or weak audience engagement
Key points
- Avoid hybrid posts that mix selling, community building, and brand positioning
- Dedicate brand content purely to aesthetics, prestige, and high-level positioning
- Dedicate community content purely to conversation, engagement, and personal connection
- Treat your own offers like high-tier sponsors with direct, unapologetic sales pieces
