Reels Safe Zone Overlay Workflow

Editing workflow to prevent UI cutoffs on short-form videos

This technique uses a transparent 9:16 safe zone overlay layer placed across your video editing timeline. It ensures on-screen text, captions, and subject eyelines avoid being covered by Instagram Reels buttons, headers, or audio bars. Hide or delete the guide track before exporting the final cut.

How it works

  1. Import a 9:16 safe zone overlay graphic (marking top/bottom UI zones, side margins, caption area, and eyeline) into your editing software (e.g., CapCut, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve).
  2. Place the safe zone graphic as the top track/layer across your entire project timeline.
  3. Lower the layer's opacity to around 30%.
  4. Frame your subject so their eyes align with the eye line marker, keep captions in the designated caption box, and keep all titles and motion graphics within the safe bounds.
  5. Hide or delete the guide overlay track before exporting your final video.

What it's for

  • Prevent on-screen captions from getting blocked by Instagram UI buttons
  • Align the subject's eyeline correctly in vertical video formats
  • Ensure titles and graphics stay inside visible margins across short-form platforms
