AI Set Dressing for Static Video

Workflow for adding virtual props and decor to locked-off footage

This technique combines locked-off camera footage with generative inpainting to digitally furnish and decorate video sets. By masking a still plate in tools like Photoshop Firefly or Stable Diffusion and compositing it around the subject, creators can avoid physical staging costs while matching lighting and perspective. It is an efficient way for solo creators to upgrade simple recording spaces.

How it works

  1. Set your camera on a tripod to capture completely static, locked-off footage.
  2. Keep lighting in the room constant throughout the recording.
  3. Take a clean background plate or still frame into an AI inpainting tool (such as Photoshop Generative Fill or Stable Diffusion Inpaint).
  4. Mask empty areas around the subject and generate desired props, furniture, animals, or room features.
  5. Composite the generated background/props behind or around the masked subject in video editing software.

What it's for

  • Decorate a plain home studio with digital furniture and wall art
  • Add virtual props and set dressing without renting or buying physical items
  • Enhance locked-off interview backgrounds with realistic decor

Key points

  • Shoot completely static footage on a locked tripod with stable room lighting
  • Export a clean frame or background plate from the recording
  • Use AI inpainting like Photoshop Generative Fill or Stable Diffusion to insert objects
  • Match perspective and ambient lighting using prompt-based generation
  • Composite the generated elements around or behind the masked subject in a video editor
