My Hook Template
A five-step framework for scripting high-retention video hooks under 30 seconds
This framework offers a structured method for writing the opening 30 seconds of YouTube and short-form videos to boost audience retention. It outlines five sequential steps from confirming the viewer's click to trimming unnecessary lines, accompanied by intro-bridging tactics and language guidelines. It serves as a practical checklist for creators looking to turn clicks into sustained watch time.
The framework
MY HOOK TEMPLATE — one-page guide to structuring and scripting the perfect hook.
Side note: If your first 30 seconds retains <40-50% of viewers, your average view duration skyrockets.
Hook steps:
1. Confirm the Click — Immediately assure viewers they've landed on the right video—no clickbait.
2. Spark Curiosity — Share a surprising, bold, or relatable statement that intrigues them to stay.
3. Tease the Payoff — Let them know what they'll gain if they keep watching (the "why" for sticking around).
4. Handle Objections (Optional) — Preemptively address doubts or questions they might have.
5. Final Check (Trimming the Fat) — Read each line and ask: "Does this propel the viewer to watch the next line?" Cut out anything fluffy or off-track. Keep it clear and concise—under 30 seconds total.
Writing the Intro After the Hook: bridge to main content. • Give context (why this matters). • Set stakes (what's to lose or gain). • Reveal payoff (what viewer learns if they watch on).
Side annotations:
- Use Simple Language: avoid jargon (e.g., "ROI," "prospect," "ROAS"); swap in everyday words (e.g., "returns," "customers").
- Pre-handle viewer questions (like handling objections in sales) to keep them watching.
- Every line must earn its keep.
Example Types: 1. Shocking Statement: "Most people spend years doing [task] completely wrong..." 2. Question Hook: "Have you ever wondered what happens if [eye-opening scenario]?" 3. Preview Hook: "By the end of this video, you'll see exactly how I turned [$X into $Y]..."
