How to Prevent iPhone BLE Crashes and Force Restart

Steps to block BLE spam attacks and force reboot a frozen iPhone

Apple iPhones can be targeted by Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) spoofing attacks, such as those sent via Flipper Zero devices, causing system lockups and crashes. Toggling off Bluetooth from the Control Center keeps BLE scanning active, requiring a complete shutdown via the Settings app to block exploit packets. If an iPhone freezes, a specific sequence of hardware buttons can force a clean restart.

How it works

To prevent BLE spam crashes:

1. Do not rely on Control Center to turn off Bluetooth, as it only disconnects active accessories while keeping the Bluetooth radio and BLE scanning active.

2. Open the 'Settings' app.

3. Tap 'Bluetooth'.

4. Toggle the Bluetooth switch to OFF.

To unfreeze/force restart an iPhone after a crash:

1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.

2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.

3. Press and hold the Side (Power) button until the screen turns black and the Apple logo appears, then release.

What it's for

  • Prevent wireless denial-of-service spam attacks in public areas
  • Completely disable the iPhone Bluetooth radio rather than just disconnecting devices
  • Force restart a non-responsive or locked-up iPhone screen

Key points

  • Open the Settings app rather than using Control Center shortcuts
  • Navigate to Bluetooth and toggle the switch completely to Off
  • Force restart by quickly pressing and releasing Volume Up
  • Quickly press and release Volume Down
  • Press and hold the Side power button until the Apple logo appears
