Golden Ratio Grid Construction for Logo Design

Constructing proportional circle grids using 1.618 for logo curve design

This technique outlines how to generate a series of proportional circles scaled by the golden ratio (1.618) inside vector design software. By arranging these circles over a rough sketch and merging them with the Shape Builder tool, designers can create balanced, mathematically harmonic curves in logo marks.

How it works

  1. Draw a square in your vector design software.
  2. Duplicate the square and multiply (or divide) its width and height by 1.618 in the transform panel. Repeat this scaling step multiple times to create a series of golden ratio proportional squares.
  3. Arrange the squares adjacent to each other in a spiral (Fibonacci) pattern.
  4. Draw a perfect circle inside each square using the Ellipse tool so each circle matches the square's width.
  5. Place your logo sketch beneath the circles, aligning the largest circle to the most prominent curve, and fitting the smaller circles to secondary curves and transitions.
  6. Select all intersecting paths and activate the Shape Builder tool to merge desired sections and subtract negative spaces into the final geometric logo mark.

What it's for

  • Refine rough logo sketches into precise geometric curves
  • Construct a Fibonacci-based circle template for brand marks
  • Clean up complex vector curves using tangent circles and the Shape Builder tool

Key points

  • Draw an initial square and duplicate it while multiplying or dividing dimensions by 1.618
  • Arrange scaled squares in a Fibonacci spiral formation
  • Fit inscribed circles into each square to create a proportional curve toolkit
  • Align circles along the primary and secondary curves of an underlying sketch
  • Use the Shape Builder tool to combine overlapping segments into final shapes
