3D Puffy Typography with Adobe Firefly

Create inflated 3D lettering using Adobe Illustrator and Firefly's reference tools

This workflow pairs vector letterforms from Adobe Illustrator with Adobe Firefly's Structure and Style Reference features to generate realistic 3D puffy typography. It transforms flat 2D lettering into inflated, textured materials without requiring dedicated 3D software like Blender or Cinema 4D. Designers can quickly iterate on custom materials, fabrics, and lighting while preserving exact typographic layouts.

How it works

  1. Design Type in Adobe Illustrator: Create your lettering, convert text to outlines, and manipulate anchor points/proportions so letters fit tightly together.
  2. Export: Export your typography artwork as a high-contrast black-and-white JPEG (File > Export > Export As... > JPEG, checking 'Use Artboards').
  3. Generate Texture Reference: In Adobe Firefly (firefly.adobe.com), enter a texture prompt (e.g., 'Shiny, black, puffy shapes made of cotton; wrinkles on fabric; white background'). Generate and download a texture you like.
  4. Apply Structure Reference: In Firefly's Text to Image settings, scroll down to 'Structure', click 'Upload image', and select your exported lettering JPEG. Adjust the Structure Strength slider.
  5. Apply Style Reference: Under 'Styles' > 'Reference', click 'Upload image' and upload the downloaded texture image. Adjust Style Strength/Visual Intensity, and optionally enable effects like 'Hyper realistic'.
  6. Generate: Click 'Generate' to transform your 2D type layout into 3D inflated material.
