Competitor Review Cold Email Playbook
A cold outreach tactic targeting angry competitor reviewers mid-churn.
This outbound lead-generation playbook involves scraping 1- and 2-star reviews of competitors on sites like Trustpilot and G2 to reach out while users are actively dissatisfied. Reviewers are mapped to LinkedIn profiles and contacted within 72 hours using a brief pitch that directly addresses their complaints. Because targets have already validated their need and budget for the category, it yields significantly higher reply and conversion rates than broad cold lists.
How it works
Tactic: scrape Trustpilot/G2 for 1-star (and 2-star) reviews of your top 3 competitors in the last 90 days, find reviewers on LinkedIn Sales Nav, pull emails with Apollo or Instantly, and email within 72 hours while they're still angry. Message template: "saw your review of [competitor]. we built [product] specifically because of complaints like yours. want to see it?" An appointment setter calls every positive reply within 5 minutes; sales convo is just "what did they fuck up / how we do it differently" — no convincing needed since they already bought the category. Funnel numbers (last month): 290 reviews scraped → 203 emails found → 23 positive replies (11.4% reply rate, ~38x the 0.3% average) → 19 calls booked → 8 closed deals at $4,200 ACV = $33,600 revenue; 41% close rate on calls. Often intercepts people mid-churn before they switch to another competitor. Key insight: every 1-star review is someone announcing they have budget, pain, and are shopping right now — competitors generate your lead list for you.
