> A technique to artificially double YouTube watch time and retention metrics

This technique involves rendering a video at 2x speed and prompting viewers via the title and thumbnail to play it back at 0.5x speed. Because YouTube logs real elapsed time rather than video timeline progression, a viewer watching at half speed generates 200% retention and twice the watch time. It was popularized by YouTuber The Spiffing Brit to trigger recommendation algorithms.

## How it works

1. Speed up your video by 2x during editing and rendering so it plays twice as fast as normal speech.
2. In the title, thumbnail, and opening frame, instruct viewers: 'YOU MUST WATCH IN 0.5X SPEED'.
3. When viewers change playback speed to 0.5x, the audio and pacing sound normal, but YouTube logs the actual elapsed playback time.
4. A 1-minute video watched at 0.5x takes 2 minutes of real watch time, resulting in a 200% average percentage viewed (retention rate), triggering strong algorithmic promotion.
