X Algorithm Landmines: 5 Things Destroying Your Reach

Rules derived from X's open-source code to avoid reach penalties

A breakdown of five specific posting behaviors that reduce visibility on X, based on findings from the platform's open-source recommendation algorithm. It highlights specific penalty mechanisms such as external link downranking, hashtag penalties, and follow ratio checks. It helps creators format and publish content without inadvertently triggering spam or toxicity dampeners.

How it works

Elon Musk confirmed hashtags hurt reach ('The system doesn't need them anymore and they look ugly'). Alex Finn, who read the 400k lines of X algorithm code, lists 5 landmines:

  1. Spamming — spam detectors (CoppypastaSpam, DowningSpamReply, NsfwText, HighToxicityScore etc. in TweetSafetyLabelType) catch repetition. Don't post/reply/DM the same thing repeatedly; don't repeat the same link; act human, not a bot.
  2. Too many tags — hashtags are dead and dock reach; also stop tagging many people in a post. Code: multipleHashtagsOrTrendsBoost = 0.6.
  3. Following too many people — the algo checks follow/follower ratio; keep following at max 60% of followers. If it's off, unfollow slowly — mass unfollowing gets you banned.
  4. Outside links — they immediately destroy reach (X wants you on-platform). Code shows tweeCredThreshold penalizes posts with a non-media, non-news external link (definite spam vector). Put links in a reply to your own post instead.
  5. Being offensive — there's code detecting offensive language; aggressive/harsh language hurts visibility. Code: offensiveBoost = 0.1. Just be a good person.

What it's for

  • Format posts and threads to maximize organic reach on X
  • Audit an existing account's follow-to-follower ratio to avoid algorithmic penalties
  • Share external links safely without depressing main tweet impressions

Key points

  • Identifies repetitive copy and link posting caught by TweetSafetyLabelType spam filters
  • Highlights algorithmic penalties against hashtags and excessive user tags (multipleHashtagsOrTrendsBoost)
  • Recommends maintaining a following count below 60% of total followers
  • Explains the penalty on external links and suggests placing URLs in reply threads instead
  • Notes the visibility dampener triggered by offensive language (offensiveBoost)
