# The 'Therefore / But' Storytelling Rule

> A narrative framework replacing chronological lists with cause-and-effect transitions.

Popularized by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, this storytelling rule forbids connecting story beats with 'and then'. Instead, every beat must link via 'therefore' (consequence) or 'but' (conflict) to build natural momentum and tension.

## How it works

1. Outline your story beats or video outline.
2. Look at the transition between each beat:
3. If the connection between two beats is 'AND THEN', cut or rewrite it. Stories connected by 'and then' feel like a passive list of events and quickly lose audience attention.
4. Replace transitions with 'THEREFORE' (cause and effect / consequence) or 'BUT' (conflict / unexpected obstacle).
5. Formula pattern:
6. \[Beat 1 happens\] -\> THEREFORE -\> \[Beat 2 happens\] -\> BUT -\> \[Complication arises\] -\> THEREFORE -\> \[Reaction / Beat 3\].
7. Application for creators (vlogs, case studies, reels):
8. Avoid purely positive or flat chronological timelines ('I woke up, and then I ate, and then I went to work').
9. Embrace friction and vulnerability: include setbacks, mistakes, and consequences to keep viewers emotionally invested in the outcome.

## What it is for

- Structure video scripts to maintain viewer retention
- Turn dry case studies into compelling narrative arcs
- Identify and fix pacing dead zones in blog posts or speeches

## Key points

- Audit story outlines by identifying transitions between each beat
- Eliminate 'and then' connections that create passive, boring event lists
- Replace passive links with 'therefore' to establish direct cause and effect
- Introduce 'but' transitions to inject conflict, mistakes, and unexpected obstacles
- Create dynamic narrative momentum across reels, vlogs, and presentations
