# The Apple Marketing Philosophy

> A three-pillar marketing framework focused on empathy, strategic focus, and presentation

Authored in 1977 by Apple early investor Mike Markkula, this foundational framework guided Apple's product and branding strategy. It centers on deeply understanding user needs, saying no to distractions to execute on key priorities, and recognizing that presentation directly shapes perceived value.

## How it works

The Apple Marketing Philosophy rests on three pillars:

1. Empathy: Truly understand customer needs better than any other company. Marketing is rooted in value creation across all touchpoints rather than superficial promotion.
2. Focus: Eliminate all unimportant opportunities to execute exceptionally well on what you choose to do. As Steve Jobs stated, focus does not mean saying yes; it means saying 'no' to 100 good ideas to concentrate relentlessly on what drives 10x–100x growth and brand affinity.
3. Impute: People do judge a book by its cover. Even the highest-quality product will be perceived as low-quality if presented in a slipshod manner; presenting it with meticulous craft and professionalism imputes the desired value into the consumer's mind.

## What it is for

- Align product positioning and branding with genuine customer needs
- Prioritize strategic business initiatives by eliminating secondary opportunities
- Design packaging, onboarding, and marketing touchpoints that convey premium quality

## Key points

- Empathy: Deeply understanding consumer feelings and needs better than competitors
- Focus: Eliminating all unimportant opportunities to execute on core priorities
- Impute: Ensuring product presentation, packaging, and marketing actively convey the intended quality and care
