Social Media Posting Frequency Guidelines

Optimal daily posting cadences across major platforms based on account data.

This reference outlines optimal daily posting frequencies across X, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, and YouTube derived from Neil Patel's analysis of over 330,000 accounts. It highlights how to maintain algorithmic reach on each network without cannibalizing recent posts. The primary guideline emphasizes maintaining production quality over merely hitting volume targets.

How it works

Recommended posting frequencies based on Neil Patel's analysis of 332,490 accounts:

- X (Twitter): 3+ times per day. The algorithm doesn't penalize future reach for low-performing posts. Use X to test ideas, then repurpose winners onto other networks. (Note: text generally outperforms video on X).

- Instagram: 1–2 Reels/posts per day, 2–4 Stories per day, and Live at least once per week. Posting more than twice a day negatively affects previous post reach.

- LinkedIn: 1 time per day. If posting twice in a day, space the posts out by at least 7 hours to avoid reducing reach on the first post.

- TikTok: 1–3 times per day (at minimum once every other day; longer gaps kill account momentum).

- YouTube: 1 Short per day and 1 long-form video per day, spaced at least 5 hours apart. Posting a combination drives the fastest growth, provided quality remains high.

- Facebook: No clear growth pattern identified; post frequency did not significantly correlate with organic reach.

Golden Rule: Content quality always outweighs post volume. Never post simply to meet quota if the quality is compromised.

What it's for

  • Plan weekly publication schedules across multiple social media channels
  • Avoid reach cannibalization between consecutive posts on LinkedIn and Instagram
  • Test raw content ideas rapidly on X before adapting them into long-form formats

Key points

  • X (Twitter): Post 3+ times per day to test ideas without algorithmic penalty for misses
  • Instagram: Post 1–2 feed posts or Reels and 2–4 Stories daily, plus 1 Live weekly
  • LinkedIn: Post once per day, or space multiple posts by at least 7 hours
  • TikTok: Post 1–3 times daily to keep algorithmic momentum active
  • YouTube: Publish 1 Short and 1 long-form video daily, spaced at least 5 hours apart
  • Facebook: Treat cadence flexibly due to minimal correlation between frequency and organic reach
