# Signaling Open Source Through Product Naming

> Use naming conventions like the 'Open' prefix to signal open source.

A practical branding heuristic for open-source software creators that suggests explicitly indicating OSS status in the product name. Prefixing or framing a name with 'Open' immediately communicates transparency and avoids being dismissed as a cheap proprietary clone.

## How it works

Rule of thumb: if the project is open source, put that in the name. "OpenCut would show your OSS aspect, while AppCut will feel like just another cheap CapCut clone." If a better name comes up, it's not too early to change your mind — even after buying the domain.

## What it is for

- Choose a memorable, clear name for a new open-source utility or alternative
- Pivot or rebrand an open-source tool before launch to distinguish it from proprietary clones
- Communicate transparency and open-source licensing at first glance

## Key points

- Explicitly signal open-source status through naming conventions like the 'Open' prefix
- Avoid generic naming patterns that make tools look like low-quality closed-source knockoffs
- Willingness to rebrand early even after purchasing a domain name
