Prompt-based web scraping with Firecrawl /extract
Extract structured web data into JSON using natural language prompts
This technique uses Firecrawl's /extract endpoint to scrape web pages by describing desired fields in plain English rather than writing CSS selectors or regex parsers. It takes a target URL and a natural language instruction to automatically parse the page into structured, LLM-ready JSON.
How it works
Using Firecrawl's /extract endpoint, describe what you want to extract in a prompt (optionally define fields in a schema builder) and it returns LLM-ready structured output. No more hard coding. Example: 'extract publish date, url and title of all articles related to LLMs' on a blog homepage returns a table of url, title, publish_date.
What it's for
- Extract specific article metadata like titles, URLs, and dates from blog indexes
- Scrape product details from ecommerce pages without writing custom HTML parsers
- Collect structured data from complex websites directly for LLM pipelines
Key points
- Extract structured JSON data using plain English prompts
- Eliminates the need for hard-coded selectors, regex, or manual parsing logic
- Supports optional explicit schema definitions to enforce output structure
- Returns clean, LLM-ready tabular or object formats directly from web pages
