# Pitch Deck Core Questions Framework

> Six foundational questions early-stage founders must address in an investor deck.

This framework outlines the critical questions founders need to answer when presenting to investors. Developed by Varun Limaye of Mesa, it helps stress-test a startup's problem definition, urgency, timing, and unique insight. It ensures the pitch focuses on real pain points and structural advantages rather than superficial feature lists.

## How it works

When pitching investors, structure your deck around these fundamental questions (Part 1 of 11 questions):

1. What is the problem that needs to be solved? Define the exact nature of the problem and validate that it is a real, painful problem rather than an imagined one.
2. Why does it need to be solved? Address the size, urgency, and intensity of the pain point. If intensity is low, customers will not change their habits to adopt your product.
3. What is the current solution? Detail how the problem is currently addressed and who the alternatives are. Your offering must be 5x–10x better to induce switching.
4. Why now? Explain why this problem could not have been solved 2–3 years ago (shifts in technology, regulation, or consumer behavior) and why today is the precise right timing.
5. What is your core insight? State the non-obvious, often counter-intuitive 'aha moment' you discovered regarding customer behavior, purchasing patterns, or market dynamics.
6. What is your solution? Clearly explain what you built and how it is quantifiably 10x better than existing alternatives.

## What it is for

- Structure an early-stage startup investor pitch deck
- Evaluate whether a business idea has sufficient market urgency and timing
- Identify and articulate a startup's unique counter-intuitive insight
- Prepare for investor diligence questions regarding switching costs and alternatives

## Key points

- Define the specific problem and validate that it represents genuine customer pain
- Explain why the problem matters now by assessing pain intensity and switching willingness
- Audit existing alternatives to show where current solutions fall short
- Frame market timing ('Why now?') around shifts in tech, regulation, or user behavior
- Articulate a non-obvious core insight or behavioral discovery
- Present a quantified solution that is substantially better than existing options
