# No-Oriented Questions Negotiation Technique

> Negotiation framework that frames questions so 'no' gives the desired commitment.

Popularized by former FBI hostage negotiator Chris Voss, this communication method rephrases questions to invite a 'no' rather than pushing for a 'yes'. Because saying 'no' makes people feel secure and in control, it reduces defensive friction and speeds up decision-making. It works well in sales, follow-ups, and business negotiations to get quick answers without cornering the counterparty.

## How it works

Framework & Technique:

1. Stop forcing people into saying 'yes' (which triggers skepticism and defensive hesitation).

2. Rephrase your call to action or closing question so that answering 'No' confirms the action.

3. Keep the outreach short (e.g., a two-line email).

Example Scripts (Chris Voss to Robert Herjavec):

- Line 1: 'Is it a ridiculous idea for you to commit to \[X action/amount\] now?'

- Line 2: 'Are you against paying for them before \[specific deadline/business day starts tomorrow\]?'

Other common reframes:

- Instead of 'Do you have a few minutes to talk?' -\> 'Is now a bad time to talk?'

- Instead of 'Do you agree with this proposal?' -\> 'Are you against moving forward with this?'

## What it is for

- Reopen stalled email conversations with unresponsive clients
- Close deals without triggering defensive sales resistance
- Request time or schedule meetings without putting pressure on the other party
- Get rapid decisions on tight deadlines

## Key points

- Reframe calls to action so negative answers signify agreement or commitment
- Substitute 'Do you have time?' with 'Is now a bad time to talk?'
- Use phrases like 'Are you against...' or 'Is it a ridiculous idea...' to lower skepticism
- Keep follow-up messages concise to prompt immediate replies
