Mixed Media Flash Cut Workflow

Step-by-step workflow for creating mixed-media match cut animations in Photoshop

This technique combines frame-by-frame product footage with aligned reference images and mixed-media textures. By matching the perspective of varied assets across sequential Photoshop artboards, it creates a fast-paced stop-motion match cut. It is commonly used for eye-catching social media product reels and commercial video edits.

How it works

  1. Record the subject (e.g., a sneaker) rotating smoothly on a motorized turntable against a clean backdrop.
  2. Export the video into individual image frames and import them onto sequential artboards in Adobe Photoshop.
  3. Gather matching reference images and screenshots from Pinterest, stock photo sites, or web searches.
  4. Layer each reference image onto an artboard, reduce layer opacity, and scale/rotate/distort it to align with the angle and perspective of the product frame.
  5. Layer in mixed-media elements such as crumpled paper overlays, drawn accents, inverted masks, and grain.
  6. Play back the aligned frames at high frame rates to create a rhythmic, seamless flash cut animation.

What it's for

  • Produce high-energy product showcase videos for social media
