# Major Record Deal Recoupment Breakdown

> How standard label contracts and recoupment clauses create compounding artist debt.

An explanatory financial breakdown from the documentary Artifact showing how major label accounting works. It illustrates how an artist can generate $5,000,000 in gross album sales yet end up owing the label hundreds of thousands of dollars due to recoupable expenses and cross-collateralization.

## How it works

How a typical major record label deal math works (example based on a 500,000 unit sale at $10/album = $5,000,000 gross revenue):

1. Advance: The label gives an upfront advance (e.g., $250,000) to the artist.
2. Royalty Split: The label takes an ~85% cut ($4,250,000), leaving the artist with a 15% royalty share ($750,000).
3. Advance Recoupment: The label deducts the $250,000 advance from the artist's $750,000 royalty, leaving $500,000.
4. Additional Recoupable Expenses: The label deducts operational costs from the artist's remaining royalty:
5. Recording costs: -$300,000
6. Half of promotion costs: -$75,000
7. Half of video production costs: -$300,000
8. Tour support: -$250,000
9. Net Outcome: Artist is -$425,000 in debt to the label.
10. Cross-Collateralization: Unrecouped debt carries over and compounds across successive albums (-$850,000 on album 2, -$1,275,000 on album 3), trapping the artist financially.

## What it is for

- Evaluate recording contract offers before signing with a major label
- Identify recoupable operational expenses in entertainment agreements
- Understand the impact of cross-collateralization across multiple album cycles

## Key points

- Gross revenue split: Label retains roughly 85% of gross sales while assigning 15% to artist royalties
- Advance recoupment: Initial cash advances are deducted dollar-for-dollar from the artist royalty pool
- Operational deductions: Recording costs, promotion shares, video budgets, and tour support are charged against artist royalties
- Cross-collateralization: Unrecouped deficits carry forward to future releases, compounding net artist debt over time
