Installing Cursor Rules via shadcn CLI
Install AI rule files into projects using shadcn CLI registries
This technique uses the shadcn CLI's custom registry support to distribute and install Cursor rules files directly into a repository. Running npx shadcn add with a registry URL adds formatted .cursor/rules configurations for Next.js, React, and TypeScript without manual file copying.
How it works
Command: npx shadcn add <registry-url> — in the video: npx shadcn add http://localhost:3000/r/nextjs.json. What it does: checks the registry, updates src/app/globals.css, and creates .cursor/rules/nextjs-react-typescript-cursor.mdc. The rule file begins: 'You are an expert in TypeScript, Node.js, Next.js App Router, React, Shadcn UI'. Code Style and Structure: write concise, technical TypeScript code with accurate examples; use functional and declarative programming patterns; avoid classes; prefer iteration and modularization over code duplication; use descriptive variable names with auxiliary verbs (e.g. isLoading, hasError); structure files: exported component, subcomponents, helpers, static content. Partial screen text also references: favor React Server Components (RSC) over 'useEffect'/'useState'/'use client' where possible, wrap components in Suspense with fallbacks, lazy loading/suspense boundaries for non-critical components, images: use WebP format, include size data, implement lazy loading; URL search parameter state management; Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, FID); shadcn/ui components and Next.js SSR; avoid web API access in small components; avoid client-side data fetching or state management libraries; best practices for Data Fetching, Rendering, and Routing.
What it's for
- Distribute standardized Cursor rules across multiple team repositories
- Bootstrap Next.js projects with preconfigured AI coding conventions
- Keep LLM system prompts in sync using registry endpoints
Key points
- Uses standard 'npx shadcn add <url>' syntax to pull configuration files
- Generates targeted rule files in the .cursor/rules directory automatically
- Configures AI coding standards for Next.js App Router, React Server Components, and TypeScript
- Works through custom shadcn-compatible JSON registry endpoints
