How to Show Up in AI Search (LLM SEO / GEO)
A six-step framework for getting recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot.
This framework outlines how B2B SaaS products can get recommended inside generative AI search tools rather than relying on traditional Google rankings. It covers entity-based positioning, answer-first content, and seeding trusted sources where models source information. It is useful for founders and marketers pivoting from traditional keyword optimization to generative engine optimization.
The framework
Premise: Forget Google — your next 1,000 users are on AI search (ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity). Not ads, not SEO.
- Understand how LLMs 'recommend', not rank. Google shows 10 links; LLMs give 1 answer. No backlinks, no DA — just confidence in what it knows. If you're not already part of its knowledge base, you don't exist.
- Shift from keyword SEO to entity SEO. LLMs don't chase keywords, they connect entities. If your SaaS = 'media optimization for developers', that association must show up everywhere: docs, social, product pages, niche forums.
- Create 'answer-first' content clusters. Forget 2,000-word blogs optimized for 'best CRM tools'. Directly answer questions like 'What CRM works best for bootstrapped founders?' or 'CRM with easiest onboarding?' Write like you're training an AI, not tricking an algorithm.
- Feed LLMs with branded signal loops. ChatGPT trains on Product Hunt, GitHub, Twitter, LinkedIn, Docs, Press, Quora, Reddit, and community forums — that's where LLMs 'learn'. Start there.
- Optimize your site for AI crawling. Simple, structured copy wins; cut the fluff. Add explicit clarity like 'Gumlet is an image optimization tool for developers.' Don't be clever, be clear — LLMs don't get cute.
- Forget traffic, focus on being the answer. You don't need 10K pageviews; you need 1 mention in a ChatGPT answer to win a deal. It's about being the default response, not reach.
