# How to Design Better Onboarding

> An eight-principle framework for designing effective mobile onboarding flows

This framework outlines eight design rules for mobile user onboarding, using real-world UI examples to illustrate best practices. It covers visual consistency, interactive empty states, progressive disclosure, and user reward systems to boost engagement and retention.

## The framework

1. First impressions matter — good onboarding boosts engagement and retention. Match your app's visual theme; make login/sign-up screens easy to navigate (NFL dark-themed sign-in example).
2. Guide users from the start — onboarding should be straightforward and focused. Don't add boring empty states; add clear CTAs on empty states ('Create your first trip') for instant engagement.
3. Use visual cues — people process visuals faster than text; use icons, images, animations to reduce cognitive load. Add relevant icons (fitness selection list), help identify clickable elements, improve visuals overall (upload from Library/Camera sheet).
4. Highlight key actions — make key actions prominent, guide with clear actionable prompts, offer a 'Skip' option ('Not now'). Let users know why they should accept (notifications example: 'Enable Notifications and Never Miss a Good Deal').
5. Personalize the experience — ask just enough info to tailor onboarding without being intrusive ('What are you interested in the most?' category picker; 'Would you like to support a creator?'). Every user is unique.
6. Offer progress indicators — for long flows, show progress bars or step counters ('What's your name?', 'When were you born?', 'Let's add some photos', 'Status/Bio' — steps 2–6 of 7). Progress bars keep users on track.
7. Celebrate user milestones — recognize completing setup or exploring features; use microinteractions (confetti 'Congratulations, your profile is ready!') and subtle badges ('Approved' badge) to make progress feel rewarding.
8. Iterate and improve (image not seen).

## What it is for

- Design a new mobile app onboarding flow from scratch
- Audit an existing sign-up flow to reduce drop-off rates
- Structure permission requests and profile setup steps without overwhelming users

## Key points

- Visual consistency: Align sign-up screens with core app styling and brand themes
- Actionable empty states: Guide users immediately with focused calls-to-action
- Visual cues: Use iconography, imagery, and animations to lower cognitive load
- Clear action hierarchy: Emphasize primary actions while providing non-intrusive skip options
- Lightweight personalization: Collect key preferences upfront to tailor the user experience
- Progress indicators: Implement step counters and progress bars for multi-step setup flows
- Milestone celebrations: Employ micro-interactions and visual rewards upon setup completion
- Continuous iteration: Test and refine onboarding steps based on drop-off analytics
