# Elon Musk's 5-Step Process (The Algorithm)

> A five-step framework for engineering design, process optimization, and automation.

This five-step mental model and engineering framework is used at companies like Tesla and SpaceX to design systems and streamline operations. It forces teams to question requirements, aggressively remove unnecessary parts, and simplify before attempting to speed up or automate work. Its main goal is to avoid wasting time and resources optimizing things that shouldn't exist.

## How it works

Elon Musk's 5-Step Engineering / Process Algorithm:

1. Make requirements less dumb: Question every requirement, regardless of who provided it, and make it as intelligent as possible.
2. Delete the part or process step: Remove steps aggressively. If you aren't forced to add back at least 10% of the things you delete, you aren't deleting enough.
3. Simplify or optimize: Only simplify after deleting. The most common error of a smart engineer is optimizing a thing that should not exist.
4. Accelerate cycle time: Speed up the process, but never try to go faster until steps 1–3 have been addressed.
5. Automate: Automate the process only as the final step.

## What it is for

- Evaluate and simplify existing business or manufacturing workflows
- Prevent over-engineering before automating a task
- Challenge project requirements handed down by stakeholders
- Identify redundant components or process steps to eliminate

## Key points

- 1. Make requirements less dumb: Question every constraint and requirement, no matter who wrote it.
- 2. Delete the part or process step: Remove steps aggressively until forced to add back at least 10%.
- 3. Simplify or optimize: Only refine the remaining components after deletion.
- 4. Accelerate cycle time: Speed up the execution of the process only after steps 1 through 3.
- 5. Automate: Add automation only as the final step once the system is fully trimmed and tested.
