# Double-Slit Experiment: Which-Path Observation

> Visual explanation of wave-particle duality and the quantum observer effect

This visual note illustrates the classic quantum physics double-slit experiment by comparing particle behaviour with and without observation. When unobserved, particles act as waves to create a multi-band interference pattern, but measuring which slit they pass through collapses the wave function into two distinct bands. It serves as an accessible mental model for understanding wave-particle duality and measurement collapse.

## The framework

Top panel: two slits, unobserved -\> back wall shows many alternating dark bands (interference pattern), the hallmark of wave-like behaviour. Bottom panel: two slits, observed/measured -\> back wall shows only two bands, one behind each slit, meaning particles now travel like particles and the interference disappears. Watching which path the particle takes collapses the wave function.

## Why it was saved

- [@ProfFeynman, 8 February 2022](https://x.com/ProfFeynman/status/1491088890153025536): A one-image explanation of wave-particle duality and the observer effect: without measuring which slit, particles produce an interference pattern (many bands); with measurement, they behave like particles leaving just two bands.
