Cursor Context Boundary Workflow
An 8-step framework for building apps with AI using structured documentation
This framework outlines a systematic method for developing applications with Cursor and complementary AI tools by establishing an explicit context boundary. It structures the process from initial brain dumps to requirements documents, file layouts, and phased frontend and backend generation. It helps prevent AI hallucinations and errors by providing models with exhaustive project specifications before writing code.
The framework
Core idea: Cursor is dumb unless you add detailed docs around your project — build a strong <Context Boundary>: App Flow Doc, PRD (Project Req. Doc.), Tech Stack & Packages, API Docs, Schema Design Doc., Frontend Code.
- Brain dump with Claude: speak out everything about your project (what it is, features, layout, inspirations). Context is key for AI.
- Use Claude or ChatGPT o1 to turn thoughts into structured output: Project Requirements Doc, Tech Stack and Packages Doc, Schema Design Doc, Detailed App Flow Doc. (Claude alone works if no o1 access.)
- Frontend code: high-quality UI → v0 (attach docs, code page by page); standard UI → Claude.
- Code assembly: fast setup → bolt.new (Next.js + dependencies in 2 prompts); manual → Cursor following Claude's instructions.
- Ask Claude to create a "File Structure" using a provided AI-friendly reference structure.
- Run code: upload the file structure to bolt (creates folders/files in 2 prompts) or Cursor (attach all docs as .md in root folder, open Composer, install Next.js + dependencies, paste file structure).
- Assemble frontend: ask Claude to implement frontend code page-by-page, producing production-ready code to paste into the right file paths.
- Create backend once frontend runs with demo data: auth (sign-in/sign-up), database tables, storage — author uses Supabase because AI can write the SQL; tag relevant schema design files in Cursor. Order: auth → database tables → storage.
What it's for
- Structure planning documents before generating application code with AI
- Scaffold full-stack web applications using Cursor, v0, and Claude
- Set up database schemas, authentication, and storage systematically using Supabase and Cursor
Key points
- Brainstorming and raw context capture using Claude voice or text
- Structured document generation covering PRD, tech stack, schema design, and app flows
- Frontend UI generation using v0 or Claude based on structured specs
- Predefined file structure generation optimized for AI coding assistants
- Context boundary setup by placing Markdown documentation in the project root
- Phased backend implementation sequence starting with auth, followed by tables and storage
