# Consensus–Contrarian Matrix

> A 2x2 matrix explaining where outsized investment returns come from

Popularized by investor Howard Marks, this 2x2 framework evaluates investment decisions along two dimensions: consensus versus contrarian, and wrong versus right. It illustrates that following the crowd only leads to ordinary or zero returns, while extraordinary returns require holding an uncommon view that turns out to be correct. It serves as a visual gut-check when identifying points of maximum market pessimism or herd behavior.

## The framework

Matrix axes: rows Consensus / Contrarian, columns Wrong / Right. Consensus+Wrong → No return. Consensus+Right → Regular-sized returns. Contrarian+Wrong → No return. Contrarian+Right → Outsized returns.

## What it is for

- Evaluate asymmetric risk and reward before entering an unpopular investment
- Identify market sentiment shifts and points of peak pessimism
- Stress-test whether an investment thesis relies on consensus agreement or distinct insight

## Key points

- Two axes: Consensus vs. Contrarian on one axis, Wrong vs. Right on the other
- Consensus and Wrong: leads to losses or no return
- Consensus and Right: yields only average, regular-sized returns already priced into the market
- Contrarian and Wrong: leads to losses or zero return
- Contrarian and Right: the only quadrant that generates outsized, asymmetric returns

## Why it was saved

- [@WClemente, 8 June 2023](https://x.com/WClemente/status/1666887971734269953): The explicit logic behind the liked tweet's meme: outsized returns only come from being contrarian and right, so the moment consensus (the media pile above) turns is when contrarian bets pay.
