# 8-Step Cursor Beginner Workflow

> Practical eight-step setup and workflow guide for building MVPs with Cursor

A step-by-step workflow for developers and founders building software with the Cursor AI editor. It covers preparation steps like generating PRD and schema files, configuring project rules, managing context across chat tabs, and documenting reusable code patterns.

## How it works

1. Plan before you code — messy plan leads to messy prompts. Use ChatGPT to generate: a simple PRD (app goals, user flows, features); database schema and table relationships; color palette and typography reference; tech stack outline (e.g. Supabase, Stripe, Tailwind). Pro tip: save all of this as .md files inside the Cursor repo so you and the AI stay aligned on scope.
2. Start with a foundation (don't go blank) — Cursor performs better with structure. Use UX Pilot for styled screen mockups, or Lovable/Bolt for fast UI generation, then refine the layout in Cursor.
3. Set up Project Rules (replaces .cursorrules) — apply scoped instructions (e.g. 'Only use Tailwind classes in .tsx files'), define naming conventions and preferred patterns, sync rules with GitHub for team use. Set up early so AI behaves like a teammate.
4. Save reusable code in Notepad — Cursor's Notepad is your AI memory. Store auth flows (Supabase signup/login), Stripe checkout setup, common fetch/query patterns, validation logic and Zod schemas.
5. Split work with Chat Tabs (Cursor 0.48) — one tab for planning/structure conversations, one for bug fixing or iterating; avoids losing context across conversations.
6. Automate with MCP (Model Context Protocol) — run scripts to clean your repo, automate database setup (e.g. Supabase table creation), pull research from Perplexity or Docs.
7. Ask the Web — use @web for real-time framework docs, recent blog posts, StackOverflow fixes. Watch out: AI can pull outdated or incorrect sources, always check links. Note: Cursor 0.46+ does this by default without @web.
8. Save working code in .md files — when Cursor gives a great response, save it in a markdown file like auth-flow.md or deployment.md, reuse later for similar apps; Cursor will refer to it in future prompts too.

## What it is for

- Set up a structured workflow before writing code with Cursor
- Keep AI-generated code consistent across an expanding MVP codebase
- Preserve reusable boilerplate and prompt context using project markdown files and Notepads

## Key points

- Plan before coding by storing PRD, schema, and design specs as markdown in the repo
- Bootstrap visual layouts using external generators before importing into Cursor
- Configure Project Rules to enforce coding conventions and styling restrictions
- Store reusable patterns like auth flows and validation logic in Cursor Notepad
- Isolate planning and bug-fixing conversations using separate Chat Tabs
- Connect Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers for database and tool automation
- Leverage web search for up-to-date documentation and library troubleshooting
- Archive working code patterns in repository markdown files for future reference
